Introduction
Studio Feather is a boutique VFX house that punches above its weight. With a lean team of artists and a roster of high-profile commercial and episodic clients, they can’t afford bottlenecks – especially on rotoscoping, one of the most labor-intensive disciplines in post-production.
Before Slapshot, rotoscoping was a constant constraint. Artists were tied to workstations for hours on single shots, and the team was turning down work rather than risk missing deadlines.
The Challenge
Studio Feather’s Head of VFX, Colin Cunningham, had evaluated several ML-based rotoscoping tools in the years prior. Each time, the mattes came back disappointing – too much fringe, inconsistent edge behavior on hair and fine detail, and artifacts that required as much cleanup as doing the work manually.
“Every tool we tried felt like a beta product,” Cunningham said. “We’d get excited by a demo, pull it into a production shot, and immediately see why it wasn’t production-ready. The gap between the demo and real footage was always the same story.”
The team needed something that could handle real-world complexity: motion blur, partial occlusions, translucent materials, and the kind of fine-detail hair work that defines quality in the industry.
Why Slapshot
Cunningham came across Slapshot through a recommendation in a professional VFX forum. What initially caught his attention was the interface: a clean web-based workflow that didn’t require installing anything on artist workstations.
“The first thing I noticed was how intuitive the web interface was,” he said. “I uploaded a test shot expecting the usual disappointment, and the first result genuinely surprised me. The mattes on hair detail were better than anything I’d seen from an ML tool.”
The background processing model was equally important. Artists could submit jobs and immediately return to other work – no sitting at a render bar, no locked workstation.
How Studio Feather Uses Slapshot
Studio Feather now runs the majority of their rotoscoping pipeline through Slapshot Autopilot. The workflow is simple: artists upload footage directly through the Slapshot web interface, configure the task, and submit. Results come back in the background, ready to pull into their compositing software.
For complex shots – fine hair, motion blur, multi-subject sequences – the team uses Slapshot’s output as a high-quality starting point, trimming hours of manual work down to minor touch-ups. For simpler shots, the Slapshot matte goes directly to comp with no cleanup at all.
The API access has also opened up automation opportunities. Studio Feather is now building internal tooling to route shots automatically based on complexity classification, with Slapshot as the processing backbone.
Results
Since integrating Slapshot into their pipeline, Studio Feather has processed hundreds of roto tasks through the platform. Workstation downtime for rotoscoping has effectively reached zero – artists are no longer waiting on local compute.
The quality improvement has been the most significant outcome. Cunningham describes it as changing what’s possible for the studio: they’re taking on projects they previously would have passed on, confident in their ability to execute the roto work at speed and quality.
“We’ve taken on three episodic projects this year that would have been borderline impossible with our old roto setup,” Cunningham noted. “Slapshot changed the math on what’s feasible for us.”
